Energy solution company Synergy has begun research on recycling different types of batteries and using them stably in a single energy storage system (ESS). In this research project, called the Heterogeneous Battery ESS Solution, Synergy plans to oversee all stages of the development process, which crosses software and hardware.
In addition to ensuring safety, it is judged to be a perfect fit for the gradually expanding small-scale and household ESS market, as it can also lower the unit price of recycled batteries. Such efforts have recently led to securing business momentum by attracting Series A investment of 10 billion won.
Jang Kwon-young, CEO of Synergy, said, “Through this technology, we will increase the price competitiveness of reusable batteries and open up new possibilities in the ESS market.”

The domestic renewable energy market is at a completely new crossroads 18 years after the first solar power supply began in 2006. The power authority is planning to open a pilot market (renewable energy bidding market and real-time/auxiliary service) in Jeju and activate the VPP market using distributed energy as the first step for the centralization of renewable energy. The pilot market is approaching as an adventure and opportunity for existing renewable energy companies, where the rules of the market itself are changing.
Synergy is a company that is leaving a different mark in this situation. While many companies have focused on power supply in the path of expanding to a comprehensive power plant (VPP), Synergy has found a way out in demand response (DR) and demand efficiency. In particular, it has recently secured operating performance of fuel cells and electric battery energy storage systems (ESS) and has also achieved economic performance. We met with Synergy CEO Jang Kwon-young and heard about the startup’s pledge to face market reorganization.

Various opinions have been expressed regarding the various business models of ESS that are recently spreading, such as the Jeju long-term BESS low-carbon central contract market and the power plant-ESS linkage plan.
On August 29, the Korea Industrial Education Institute held a seminar titled ‘New Industry and Diverse Business Model Expansion Seminar in the Distributed E-Era – ESS·Energy Superstation’ at the Lifelong Education Center of the Social Welfare Education Center in Geumcheon-gu, Seoul.
At the seminar that day, measures to revitalize the ESS industry, which has great growth potential in the future, such as linking VPPs, energy stations, and power plants, were also presented.

Synergy (CEO Jang Kwon-young), the first domestic startup to take on the fuel cell power plant business, is now pushing forward with the completion of the first commercial PEM (Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell) fuel cell power plant in Korea.
On the 1st, Jang Kwon-young, CEO of Synergy, said, “Synergy’s most important goal this year is to complete the first commercial PEM fuel cell power plant in Korea.”
Synergy is the first domestic startup to jump into building a fuel cell power plant.
The fuel power plants currently under construction in the Chungcheong region are 3MW (2 sites, total 6MW), and upon completion, they will be evaluated as the largest PEM type power plants in Korea for commercialization purposes.

The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 12th that it selected Jaeyoung Ahn, head of Samsung Heavy Industries, and Kwonyoung Jang, CEO of Synergy, as the recipients of the Korea Industrial Technology Promotion Association and the Korea Engineer Award for December 2022.
The Korea Engineer Award is an award that selects one engineer from a large company and one engineer from a small and medium-sized company every month to encourage technological innovation in the industrial field and create an atmosphere that favors engineers. The Minister of Science and ICT Award and a prize of 5 million won are awarded.
Jang Kwon-young, CEO of Synergy, was recognized for his contribution to improving power system efficiency and enhancing the competitiveness of the domestic energy storage industry by successfully developing the design and operation technology for the first energy storage system (ESS) for power demand response in Korea.
